Net zero cities

Europe’s 100 climate-neutral cities: what does this mean for our sector?
By 2030, Europe aims to make 100 cities fully climate-neutral. It’s an ambitious plan, and one with major consequences for our industry. Once these cities reach ‘net zero’, it will change the way we build, tender, and invest in equipment.

What is a ‘net zero city’?
A net zero city emits no CO₂ on balance. That means cleaner energy, sustainable transport, circular construction, and stricter environmental standards. Think zero-emission zones in city centers, mandatory electric machinery on infrastructure projects, or CO₂ caps in public tenders.

In 2022, the European Commission selected 100 cities (actually 104) to lead the way - including (in the Netherlands) Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, and Groningen. These frontrunners will serve as examples for the rest of Europe, setting higher standards for everyone involved in urban projects. Today, 112 cities across 35 countries are part of this initiative.

What does this mean for you?
For many machine operators, contractors, and decision-makers in the civil engineering and infrastructure sector, it boils down to one thing: electrification is here to stay. Maybe not yet at a national level everywhere, but certainly locally. Zero-emission zones are expanding, and more and more clients - both public and private - are setting strict emissions requirements. Sustainability is becoming a hard requirement, directly affecting your equipment fleet and your competitive position.
